Creative Director, Publishing – Magazines, Havas House

Havas Havas — the custom media, content, and publishing division of Havas Global — is looking for an experienced Creative Director, Magazine Publishing, to develop and manage high design standards for the company’s portfolio of publications. The Creative Director, Publishing, will devise and present concepts and strategies for current and potential clients. They will be able to implement their creative vision and become the point of reference for all creative plans. The goal is to achieve the best possible outcome of our projects both visually and creatively and essentially eclipse customer expectations and drive growth. Publishing and magazine experience required.


Summary of responsibilities:

The Creative Director, Publishing, will create strategically designed, eye-catching print (magazine) and digital products that engage readers and achieve results for Havas House’s custom publishing clients. The Creative Director, Publishing, will:

  • Oversee the overall visual strategy, creation and coordination of magazine design and prototype work for existing clients and new business pitches 
  • Professionally and creatively present ideas and strategies directly to clients and communicate with them as creative authority as needed
  • Drive creativity and innovation on behalf of Havas House 
  • Concept and implement a wide variety of magazine design styles to fit client needs, ranging from high-end luxury lifestyle to business-oriented projects and everything in between
  • Juggle several creative projects at once while adhering to multiple deadlines
  • Collaborate with Havas House’s editorial team, freelancers, photographers, and illustrators to ensure delivery of visually appealing and cohesive print and digital products
  • Stay current on publishing industry trends and technology and drive cutting-edge ideas for our products
  • Establish the design department budgets and work with the production manager to create production schedules for new products
  • Manage and adhere to budgets, processes and timelines
  • Work with sales teams to execute layouts that are in line with client and advertiser needs 


  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, or practical relevant experience 
  • 10-15 years’ related editorial magazine design experience (experience working with external clients in an agency-type environment is preferred)
  • Strong, creative publishing/magazine portfolio and passion for good design
  • Ability to understand and implement client strategy, branding and nuances in original designs
  • Firm design and layout skills including strong command of Adobe Cloud programs, especially InDesign/InCopy, Photoshop and Illustrator, and understanding of typography, infographics, maps and illustrations
  • Ability to direct and/or participate in department initiatives (time tracking, stock company negotiations, creating efficiencies, working with IT on upgrades and issues)
  • Clear knowledge of stock resources and original image licensing agreements
  • Ability to conceptualize, produce, negotiate and art direct commissioned photo shoots or illustrations when required
  • Ability to clearly and concisely express yourself and explain your ideas and concepts to clients and internal team members
  • Highly organized team player who enjoys collaboration
